Before the 20th Century, mental illness was not seen as a treatable medical condition, as it is today, but as a permanent problem (or worse, possession by the devil). What do you think of Ophelia's "treatment"?

Mr. Sullivan, my 12th grade English teacher, made us dress up in Burger King crowns and sword fight with paper towel tubes to make sense of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Here at the American School in Guadalajara we are going to use the internet instead. In the posts below, follow us as we seek to understand why this really is the greatest play in the English language.
Ophelia's treatment is not very suitable for a mental person to be in. Locking her up in a spongy room while she sings and cries is not going to help anybody, especially Ophelia. But i guess thats the only solution they'd have for an illness like that, since in those times they didn't know much about mental illnesses.
ReplyDeleteI think that how they are all treating Ophelia is ridiculous, and that locking her up and acting as if she is not a human is just going to make it worse. When you look down upon someone as if they are physco or mentally ill, they start to become it. Also she has a reason to be going crazy because she is not allowed to be with the one she loves, and also her father had just died.

Ophelia´s treatment is really horrible. By having her in a close room she is going to become crazier. Maybe they should take her with her brother or Hamlet. They shoudn´t be tying her up, they should talk more with her, distract her. The process they are using is and will get Ophelia´s mentalhealth worst.

Ophelias treatment in just terrible, it will make her loose her mind in 100% if she continues t be treated like that. She should be treated as any one else and have a therapist or somebody to talk too, eventually she would realize if her illness didint go too far that she is saying nonsense and possibly would fall in the ral world again, because she went mad from one day to another, its not something that she had for a long time. They send her to the grave with that treatment, it was that bad.

I think Ophelias treatment for crazyness is totally the incorrect way to treat a pacient with this disorder. Treating her like that will just cause more and more problems inside herself. All the damage in her brain will be increasing everytime they hit her, tight her up and everytime they shoot water to her.Its like causing dead it just drives the person crazier.

Treating Ophelia like an animal won't solve anything for anyone. Shooting water at her could only make her worse, and confining her in a little room with almost no space wouldn't help a lot either. Being in a strong-jacket doesn't do any good. In fact, it only makes it worse. This is the wrong treatement for a person that has that illness and therefore they lead her to commit suicide. Tragic story.

ReplyDeleteI think that the way Ophelia is being treated is not suitable for her. Those who are supposedly helping her are making things worst. Instead of taking the time to speak to her, treat her with respect and let time heal her wounds, they are treating her like an animal. Putting someone in a straight-jacket in a room with soft walls and treating her different, like if she were mentally retarded will eventually make people crazy or crazier than they already are. If they had treated Ophelia the opposite way, being empathethic and comprehensive, she would have gotten over her problems and she would still be alive. Besides, who said it was easy to bear a broken heart and a parent´s death.
I don't think the treatment Ophelia is receiving is working for her. Putting her into a strong jacket creates much more desesperation and "madness" I think this is moment to be with her, speak with her, hug and be gentle with her, not isolating her into a small room with no place to go. I know that during those times you were consideres either crazy or normal... the possibility for any mental illness or disorder or even depression was not considered, so this is why giving a good treatment to Ophelia would be very hard.

I think the way Ophelia's sickness is being handle is totaly wrong. Tying her up and putting her “away”. This makes the situation worse because, I think, what she most needs right now is to be with someone close to her someone who loves her and understands her suffer. Maybe she is not even eating well and this may bring serious problems of nutrition that will cause her brain and body to start working wrong and not helping her get back together.

ReplyDeleteI think that treating Ophelia the way they are is pretty much the best they could do, for in thos time medicine and psychiatry were nothing of what they arenow. They are ding the best they can to take care of her.
I think Ophelias treatment is really bad although the cold water she is bath with works. I had a dog who had mental illness and to cure cure him we had to shower him with really cold water. The best solution to her madness is to be close to his brother and closer family.

The Ophelias case i think that its being treated in a really bad situation because they are just making it worse because they are not talking her in a real way, they are talking her in a mad way. They should just make her know the real stuff that its happening showing her the real world.

Ophelias "treatment" does nothing but confine her and segregate her from the rest of society. This only aggravates her situation and makes it harder for her to integrate back into society. By treating her as a leper, Claudius and Gertrude are only contributing to her madness. I think a much more effective alternative would be to get her to calm down and to have some sort of psychological therapy for her in which someone can sit down with her, talk her problems through, and make her feel better.

I think that Ophelia's treatment is very bad because i makes the person become even more mad than he already is. Not able to see the light and all the things outside in the world is a very traumatizing thing. This treatment is a very bad thing to do and I think Ophelia doesn't deserve it. They intend to help Ophelia, but in a very bad way and at the end she will be ending up more crazy.

Ophelias treatment is terrible! She is passing through a rough time for his father's death and instead of helping her, taking care of her or just caring for her, she is placed away from everything and she is tied up all by herself. The treatment she is given, is like the opposite act that should be done.
